Storyline? Genre?

My imagination has been going wild with potential storylines for my film opening. It almost feels like I am unlocking a whole creative side of me that I didn't know existed. Some ideas were openings to horror films that I did not feel passionate about and scratched, many were cheesy, teen film openings that I decided against because I feel I can come up with something better, and there was even an idea that fell into the mystery genre that just did not stick with me.

Coming up with a storyline that I am excited about, feel is unique and intriguing, and is something I believe I can pull off has been a challenge. However, I now have an idea in mind that falls under the genre of drama that I will be sticking with. It will be slightly hard to pull off and I have tons of research to do in order to ensure that I have the knowledge to create this film opening successfully, but I feel ready to take on this challenge. My next step is to learn more about every aspect of the development and production process for my specific idea and prepare myself to bring these images I have in my mind to life.

And so it begins...

This post marks the official start of a journey that I am nervous yet excited to take on. I have never done a project quite this large, but I feel ready to take on this challenge. I'm going to push my creative limits, think outside the box, and use what I have access to to my best ability. I am excited to see what I am capable of creating.

Many thoughts about this project have been racing through my mind, and I am a bit overwhelmed with figuring out where to start. I have to choose a genre, storyline, shots I want to create, setting, etc. But I am going to take this step by step, starting with some research, and I am excited for you to follow along through this journey with me.

Post Music Marketing Project

The music marketing project required strategic brainstorming, planning, and research before diving into the production and presentation. After choosing our song, my group and I immediately went into juggling ideas on the vibe and persona we wanted to market our artist with, as this has an effect on the specific marketing choices we were going to make. However, before constructing our marketing plan, we conducted research in order to learn more about how artists in country music are promoted and find inspiration.

The first step in conducting our research was finding two successful country music record companies from which we would choose our four artists to do case studies on, two from each label. We decided on Kacey Musgraves and Carrie Underwood from Universal Music Group Nashville, and Blake Shelton and Dan + Shay from Warner Music Nashville. We chose these four artists because they are all current, popular, and successful country music artists that corresponded well with the artist we were planning on developing. We did research on and looked into each one of them, compiling information on the marketing strategies and distribution plans used in order to build their careers into a graphic organizer. This research greatly contributed to our understanding of the genre and successful techniques used when promoting an artist, therefore, this information inspired our own marketing and distribution plan we created.

One of the main factors that contributed to the specifics of our marketing plan was the target audience for our artist's music, who we named Daisy Davis. We discussed this factor and concluded that our Daisy's listeners would consist of mostly teenage and young adult girls. Therefore, much of our marketing plan had a great focus on social media, as social media is very popularly used within this age group. For example, we created a twitter, instagram, and youtube account for Daisey. Her posts would consist of teasers and promotions for albums and music videos that are going to be released, along with more personal posts in order to develop the image that Daisy is a regular girl that people could connect and relate to. We also developed a website in order to have an outlet that provided easy access to Daisy's music and updates.

Last was the music video which consisted of shots of "Daisy" singing the song while also showing scenes that developed a storyline. This plan portrayed Daisy as an artist while also being captivating and entertaining.

Music Marketing Project Planning

I am currently working on a music marketing group project in aice media studies. The project includes multiple components, so it requires a lot of planning. My group and I have been brainstorming a multitude of ideas that will help our project reach its full potential. My group and I have created a doc in order to combine all our ideas into one well-planned process. While it may be difficult to incorporate each member's ideas, we are doing the best of exemplifying each of our best contributions to the overall project. By using this doc my group will be able to formulate an exact plan of the ideals we wish to add into our music video and marketing campaign for the artist we are creating.

Before fully diving in to the planning process of our project, my group and I did research on artists that we believed to be similar to the artist we are creating, who creates country music. We did four study cases on country music artists in order to analyze the marketing, distribution methods, and fan interactions that go into building them as an artist. We used this information as inspiration towards how we should build our artist's brand. All of the research was organized into a chart that we have been continuously referring back to as guidance throughout our planning process.

Research Chart on Country Music Artists

My group and I are now working on planning out the specific actions we are going to take in order to promote our artist. For example, we were discussing a method we can use in order to incorporate fan interaction and marketing into one mission, similar to Kacey Musgraves Street Team that is explained in the chart. We also planned out the image and vibe we would like to create for our artist. We plan on marketing her as a sweet, hometown country girl, and keeping all visuals that are included in her marketing to a flowery, bright, and nature theme.

We also discussed what we believe would be the target audience of our artists music, and decided that it would most likely be teenagers and young adults. This will greatly effect the way we market our artist and the distribution methods we will follow. For example, we would make the music available on platforms that are most common with young people, and create social media accounts that have users mainly in the targeted age group.

Representation Analysis

The tide commercial featured a woman and her daughter. The mother is white and very formal and feminine. She is sitting on the coach with her legs perfectly crossed, in a white skirt and pink, fitted top. Also the living room it is set in is perfectly posh, just like the mother, with feminine patterns and hints of pink. However, her daughter is dressed up in boy clothes, as this is what she prefers, and the mother explains that she does not like it and secretly wishes that the tide didn't get out the stains. The environment created in this commercial is stereotypical toxic, as it only represents the white middle class, and the mother should be fully supportive of what her daughter prefers to wear. Especially with the new waves of support and inclusion towards gender fluid clothing in society, the representation of a basic white mother who expects her daughter to be the same is very outdated and should not be advertised. This commercial would make the public feel as if this perfected version of a home is what is expected from a typical American and that girls are not supposed to wear boy clothes. However, this is not true and I believe non inclusive and single-minded ideals like this should not be represented in modern commercials.

The H&M commercial is very inclusive and accurately represents the diversity and acceptance in today's society. They show many different races and ethnicities, boys dressed in girls clothes, girls dressed in masculine clothes, different age groups wearing "younger" looking clothes, and different genders wearing any color or style they please. The fluid representation of all people in this commercial would make all people feel included, as it romanticizes all the different possibilities of what people could look like. I personally love this commercial and I believe it would leave its viewers feeling inspired and appreciated.
